Mental Health Awareness Week 13 -19th May 2024

Grace House are proud to support Mental Health Awareness Week, the theme this is year is Movement, Moving more for out mental health. Join in and help to create a world with good mental health for all. Find out more and get involved: https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/ The public’s knowledge and understanding of common mental health issues like anxiety and depression has moved in a positive direction over the last 20 years. This has helped a lot of people. However, one in four of us will experience a mental health problem, but many still feel isolated, ashamed, and unable to open up on their lived experience. Grace House provides a range of support services including Counselling, Therapy workshops, Yoga, Reiki, Boxercise and much, much more to support families with both their physical and mental wellbeing.

Grace House, One place your Space programme has provided counselling and therapeutic support to over 680 parents disabled children and their siblings in the past seven year and continues to encourage everyone to be more open about mental health – to talk, to listen, to change lives.

75% of mental illnesses start before a person’s 18th birthday, with most long-term mental health problems beginning in adolescence. Our range of targeted support sessions for disabled children has developed young people’s resilience through life’s unexpected turns and transitions. In Mental Health Week, we highlight the importance of mental health support from a young age.

If you would like to improve both you and your family’s mental health contact us at Grace House for information on a host of active, fun physical and mental well-being sessions. Email Keith at [email protected] to find out more.

Grace House Statement

Earlier this year we were given notice that Sunderland Care and Support would no longer be providing their Short Breaks service hosted by Grace House with delivery transferring to Together For Children (TFC). Following short discussions TFC have decided to look for more suitable premises to deliver their service.

Attending Short Breaks at Grace House has given children the opportunity to access the charity’s excellent facilities, which include a custom made forest school, sensory garden, fully accessible play area, soft playroom, fun outings and so much more.

The support Grace House provides to disabled young people and their families has grown massively over recent years and these support services like counselling, parent and family carer support groups provided by Grace House remain unaffected and will continue.

CEO Victoria Brown “We understand the anxiety this decision will have on those families that currently access TFC’s Short Breaks service and we support those calling for that disruption to be minimised.”  To query where Short Breaks will operate from moving forward, we would encourage families to contact TFC.

Should anyone wish to discuss this matter with Grace House please email [email protected].

Changes at Grace House

What is next for Grace House?
We’re really proud of the work we do at Grace House and over the coming weeks we’re going to be shaping our strategy to build on this success over the next 3 years. We’re committed to carrying on all the great work we do with disabled children and their families and we’re excited that we’re now able to do more youth groups and life skills work from Grace House. We’ll soon be making some changes in the building which will create more counselling rooms so that we can support the increasing demand for that support.
For the last few years, Sunderland Care and Support have operated Short Breaks. This has now transferred to Together For Children and from the end of the this year this will be moving to another location. Please speak to your usual contact at Together For Children about how Short Breaks will be provided after the end of the year.
We strive to adjust to changes in the needs of our community and to work with our partners in a way that provides sustainable support to those that need it. We appreciate that although the coming changes will allow us to do a lot more to support our community, there is inevitably a degree of uncertainty involved with change. This can be daunting to families and young people, and so we welcome any conversations with those affected and that would like to discuss this in more detail with us.
